The Challenge

GE Appliances is seeking a Chief Purchasing Officer (CPO) to drive a step change in its procurement and sourcing function to accelerate profitable growth while driving efficiency, reducing spend, improving stakeholder buy-in and enabling value creation and overall total cost of ownership. The successful individual will be accountable for Strategic Sourcing and Vendor Management globally, managing $7.7 billion in addressable spend on Direct and Indirect categories and Finished Goods.
Additionally, the CPO will co-lead Haier’s Global Sourcing Council, focused on identifying and realizing synergies across the businesses and ensuring a standardized set of best-in-class procurement policies, processes, procedures, and standards across the company.

What you will Do

Continue to grow and evolve the organization-wide strategic sourcing program for its $7.7 billion in spend

  • The CPO will assess the company’s global sourcing and procurement strategy, making selective enhancements and using a category management approach, identifying key priorities and areas of focus. The successful candidate will be tasked with delivering on targeted cost savings while at the same time ensuring the expected value is delivered. This includes improved sourcing alternatives and more rigorous demand planning to optimize procurement activities across the organization. This individual will provide enterprise-wide subject matter expertise for sourcing and procurement, collaborating effectively with business leaders across the organization.

Manage and partner with suppliers 

  • The CPO will be accountable for managing supplier relationships and developing negotiation strategies, and driving negotiations to achieve GE Appliances’ goals and objectives. Moreover, s/he will deliver value through supplier collaboration and continuous improvement initiatives.

Drive financial performance 

  • The CPO will deliver significant and sustained cost reduction and cost avoidance while managing risk and ensuring quality. Importantly, the CPO will drive margin improvement by effectively managing raw material inflation and developing an efficient and effective international sourcing strategy given today’s changing trade and tariff climate.

Co-lead global Haier sourcing council

  • In partnership with other procurement leaders globally, deliver synergies by leveraging volumes across Haier’s ~$12 billion in spend. Work to ensure best-in-class sourcing processes and methodologies are in place across the enterprise.

Provide exceptional customer service and support 

  • The successful candidate will ensure that the various internal customers of this function, as well as other relevant stakeholders, have access to reliable and relevant financial information with regard to supplier/vendor and category sourcing and procurement information. S/he will lead regular business reviews with suppliers and business leaders to monitor and manage vendor performance, ensuring contract compliance.

Provide outstanding team leadership

  • The CPO will ensure that the organization has the required skills and capabilities to implement the sourcing and procurement strategies. S/he will provide coaching, support, and development opportunities to develop a strong sourcing and procurement, global team.

Be a thought leader and innovator 

  • Position GE Appliances as a thought leader and innovator in sourcing and supply chain with cutting-edge approaches and methodologies. Track record in scouting for and implementing new technologies, namely the use of digital in supply chain.

What you need to Succeed

What you need to be successful:

  • Best-in-Class Sector/Company Experience: Experience in a sector for which procurement is a core competency, such as industrial and consumer, and with a company known for best-in-class supply chain and operations.
  • Procurement Leadership at Scale: Has led a procurement function for a multi-region division or enterprise in the multi-billion-dollar revenue range.
  • Procurement Thought Leader and Subject Matter Expert: Deep understanding of strategic sourcing, category strategy, vendor economics, supplier management/innovation, and total cost of ownership. Brings market intel and stays abreast of industry/functional/technology developments. 
  • A strong and fact-based negotiator with methodologies such as clean sheet costing and continuous improvement mindset.
  • Relevant Category Sourcing: Has led the strategic sourcing of Direct and Indirect categories aligned with GE Appliances. Experience managing the procurement of commodities impacted by inflation.
  • International Leadership: Experience in leading sizeable international and diverse teams and securing/managing relationships with global suppliers. Thrives in a corporate environment with international stakeholders (in this case, the Haier relationship will be critical). Experience leading procurement in a changing trade environment.
  • Transformation: Has driven a step-change in the procurement function, driving significant and sustainable cost reduction (preferably 10% yoy) through implementing world-class procurement methodologies and talent development. Influential and able to manage stakeholders; can build a case for change and gain buy-in from key stakeholders. Bring Continuous improvement experience (e.g. Six Sigma).
  • Analytical Skill/Financial Acumen: Quantitative and numbers driver with the ability to link procurement and supply chain initiatives to the P&L and Balance Sheet. Able to assess large amounts of data quickly and come to clear and actionable recommendations.
