The Challenge

The Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (AME) Director is responsible for the overall manufacturing strategy and execution in all factories including foreign affiliates in the assigned product line. The AME Director will lead the AME team from Appliance Park, directing the manufacturing execution for New Product Introduction (NPI), Cost-Out and Plant Productivity projects. The AME Director is the primary reviewer and approver of the manufacturing portions of NPI projects and plant changes and responsible for ensuring all changes conform with manufacturing and industry standards. As a key liaison between the product development teams and the factory operations & engineering teams, the AME Director ensures that plant priorities/objectives and product line strategies align.

What you will Do

Organizational Leadership:

  • Responsible for the AME team’s compliance to GEA Controllership rules with respect to asset classification, asset identification and capital effort allocation for all tooling and equipment projects lead by the AME teams. 
  • Ensure all resources are allocated between NPI programs, Cost-Out and Productivity projects. 
  • Manage and mentor AME team members within the product line. Duties include relevant human resource and development aspects, annual reviews, training, and career development of employees.
  • Review, Track and Manage all advanced manufacturing risk within the product line.  Ensure resources are adequately deployed to resolve gaps based on business priorities and elevate any organizational gaps are required.
  • Provide appropriate mentoring to AME program leaders as needed.
  • Participate in growing the AME organization’s manufacturing capability.  This includes mentoring, guiding, and helping more junior team members, as well as, adding to the body of knowledge of the department (training, developing new manufacturing processes, supporting Hoshin objectives, etc.)

Standards and Compliance:

  • Primary manufacturing reviewer for all product line reviews, including NPI program and C-Change project reviews.  As the primary reviewer, will be responsible to provide in-depth analysis of all programs / projects and provide an overall assessment of the program risk with respect to conforming to GE standards, processes, and initiatives in addition to ensuring the manufacturing plan for the program optimizes business objectives/metrics and factory deliverables (Safety, Quality, Delivery and Cost).  In addition to an assessment, the AME Director is expected to provide feedback and recommendations for improvements. 
  • Work with functional leaders to ensure equipment & processes support business initiatives of Bill of Process (BoP), Lean Manufacturing, Ergonomic Design and Total Productive Maintenance (TPM)
  • Ensure all equipment executed in GEA factories comply with Industry and Governmental Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) standards.
  • Promote Human Organizational Performance (HOP) principles to ensure that all equipment / tooling / processes are implemented with the health and safety of the operators in mind. 

Strategic Execution & Cross-functional Leadership:

  • Work with Product Management and Product Development teams to align manufacturing resources with the multi-year development plan (Blueprint process).  
  • Develop and execute multi-year Hoshin Plan for the organization. 
  • Align Hoshin Plan with AME functional Hoshin and product line Hoshin.  Collaborate with leaders to resolve any conflicts.
  • Work with Plant Manufacturing Engineering Manager to coordinate key capital equipment projects requiring RTP AME resources.
  • Provide input to all program scopes with respect to capital equipment/tooling, factory layout, manufacturing processes, material flow, testing equipment as well as all resources required to execute the projects.
  • Champion, promote and teach use of the 9-step process for tooling and equipment design; consult Critical Process leaders as applicable to ensure development of robust processes for part / product generation.  Work with cross-functional team to develop MCPs and MCIs.
  • Champion, promote and teach the use Lean tools and principles on all projects in the product line.  Facilitate/lead/promote the use of the Production Preparation Process (3P) while developing manufacturing equipment and processes. 
  • Utilize cross-functional participation to ensure that the equipment and processes are compatible with the entire value stream.  Efforts should include right-sized equipment, workstation design, material presentation, standard work, and single piece flow.
  • Champion, promote and teach Lean manufacturing principles including the use Appliance Performance System within the factory process areas.
  • Work with design team to ensure Design for Manufacturing & Assembly (DFMA) is considered on part design.

What you need to Succeed

Position Requirements

  • Prior experience managing capital equipment procurement projects: Including specification development, supplier selection, technical reviews, installation, and qualification of equipment in a large-scale manufacturing environment
  • Direct Management experience for highly skilled engineering teams
  • Experience and thorough understanding of cross-functional NPI process
  • Ability to work in large cross-functional teams and at multiple levels in the organization (both salaried and shop floor operators / skilled trades team members)
  • Ability to communicate effectively and be an agent for change – will be expected to provide report outs to executive leadership team.
  • Good organizational, project management and presentation skills to interact with all levels within the organization and with suppliers and vendors
  • Demonstrated ability to take ownership of cross-functional deliverables and ability to drive decisions based on the overall benefit to the company
  • Fluent in Lean manufacturing principles
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor, develop, grow, and maintain a skilled engineering team

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering/related discipline
  • 10+ years of experience with procurement, testing, installation of manufacturing equipment and process improvement
  • Manufacturing project leadership experience: demonstrated ability to manage an engineering team, manage program risk to meet technical & commercial requirements

Preferred Qualifications:

  • BS degree in Mechanical, Industrial or Manufacturing Engineering
  • Experience with assembly line design, automation and customized fabrication equipment and manufacturing processes
  • Experience with implementing Lean process improvement in a manufacturing operation
  • Experience in operational plant Manufacturing Engineering a plus
  • Familiarity of capitalization requirements, understanding business financials
  • Six Sigma Certification
  • Proficient in MS Office, MS Scheduler (or equivalent) and AutoCAD

Working Conditions:

  • 20-30% travel may be for domestic and/or international travel to supplier sites/ plants, etc.
  • Hours & Weekends: Working off-shift and weekends will be required.
  • Working conditions are normal for a high-volume manufacturing environment.
  • Work may involve lifting of materials and product up to 30 pounds and working in and around heavy equipment.
  • Working in this environment requires the use of safety equipment to include but not limited to; eye safety glasses, hearing protectors, work boots, and hardhats.
  • These roles will require frequent walking in a manufacturing plant environment.
