The Challenge

Provide leadership and coaching with the development and implementation of lean manufacturing and continuous improvement initiatives within a GE Appliances’ manufacturing facility. Drive positive change by developing a culture of teams that proactively eliminate waste and continuously improve Safety, Quality, and Cost metrics.

What you will Do

Oversee, plan and execute plant improvement projects in support of the Lean plan, hoshin goals and Appliance Production System (APS) target conditions.

  • Organize and lead lean events to focus on eliminating waste in both product and process design. This includes labor cost out, factory flow improvements, safety/ergo, and material flow.
  • Key enabler of strategy deployment and hoshin planning for the manufacturing operation, demonstrating in-depth knowledge of the goals, objectives and strategies of the organization.
  • Execute production system through fishbone, small scale layout, and full scale mock-ups prior to purchasing equipment.
  • Develop value stream maps for the organization and eliminate process waste through implementation of lean techniques.
  • Drive consistency and timely implementation of all Lean activities (led workshops, Kaizen Promotion Office (KPO) creation, etc.).
  • Work with NPI teams to setup new processes with design.
  • Provides status reports regarding the execution of plant Lean Plan. Partners with Business Leaders to maintain meeting rhythm, ensure Cost Out progress, and track project status and closure. 
  • Documents and shares best practices and lessons learned.

Coach and teach plant support staff, including front line leaders and team leaders.

  • Provides coaching, mentoring and training on the application of APS methodology and tools in one-on-one and group settings to reinforce knowledge and skills attained during APS training.
  • Coach and teach plant teams in developing and executing lean plans to reduce inventory, lead-time, and waste to improve process quality.
  • Creates opportunities for employees to learn through their jobs and within the classroom.
  • Develops training material as needed.

Provide daily work direction and coaching to Kaizen Promotion Office (KPO) team members.

  • Facilitate day-to-day activities for KPO. Prioritize and assign out work.
  • Track progress of projects to ensure timely completion.
  • Develop the Lean skillset of KPO's through ongoing coaching and teaching.
  • Facilitate day-to day activities for Industrial Engineering Coordinators
  • Facilitate day-to-day activities for Ergonomics Technician
  • Serves as Lean Process expert for the plant operation.
  • Provides coaching, mentoring and training on the application of APS methodology and tools via classroom or hands-on, learning-by-doing activities to reinforce knowledge and skills attained during APS training.

  • Network with other GEA Lean teams to capture and promote lean best practices.

What you need to Succeed

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a technical discipline (engineering or operations)
  • 5 years of experience working within a manufacturing environment in roles of increasing responsibility and influence.
  • 5 years of experience utilizing Lean techniques and tools within a high-volume production operation.
  • Strong project management skills to independently develop, manage, lead and implement aggressive project plans.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree (MBA or Masters of Engineering)
  • Prior experience working within and developing under the Appliance Production System (APS) in such roles as Team Leader, Kaizen Promotion Officer (KPO) and/or Area Business Leader.
  • Experience building, empowering and leading Lean continuous improvement projects and talented cross-functional teams.
  • Experience applying Lean tools and processes, such as Kaizen, 5S, Poka-Yoke, Kanban, JIT, SMED.
  • Ability to build and promote organizational change management initiatives focused on positive relationships, building an idea/problem-solving culture.
  • Vision and courage to pursue big ideas, encourage smart experimentation.
  • Ability to communicate complex matters in a simple, understandable format.
  • Strong analytical, root cause analysis and problem solving skills.
  • Green Belt or Black Belt Six Sigma Certification.

Working Conditions:

  • Working conditions are normal for both an office and manufacturing environment.
  • Work may involve lifting of materials and product up to 54 pounds.
  • Working in the manufacturing environment requires the use of safety equipment to include but not limited to: safety glasses, hearing protection, gloves, work shoes/boots.
  • Work may require occasional weekend and/or evening work.
