The Challenge

The Ergo/EHS Specialist position is an individual contributor role that will report directly to a EHS Director. This role is responsible for implementation and maintenance of the GEA Ergonomic / EHS Management Systems. Examples of support include but are not limited to conducting ergonomic assessment, executing compliance assurance program tasks (e.g., conducting audits and inspections), performing environmental inspections, presenting EHS compliance training, and working closely with operators, technicians, and/or skilled trades and their supervisors to develop a robust EHS culture and reliable processes. Performs data analysis for safety trends in injuries.

What you will Do

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

EHS Operations: Provide functional EHS leadership and technical expertise to the site Operations team to support business needs based on safety compliance requirements, business risk profile, change management needs, and performance objectives.

  • Utilize engineering controls to eliminate hazards that cause or have the potential to cause injuries and incidents.
  • Incorporate Ergonomics design criteria, industrial engineering, manufacturing engineering or product engineering with respect to ergonomic risk identification, analysis and resolution, development and implementation of controls, productivity initiatives and reviews ergonomic impact of engineering and process changes.
  • Make recommendations based on evaluations of workstations, as well as assessments of new/modified part design.  Ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects to completion. Evaluate effectiveness of changes.
  • Act as a technical resource to the supervisor and engineers for resolution of ergonomic problems and Lead Multidisciplinary teams to address ergonomic issues.
  • Support development and implementation of the site-specific injury reduction including prioritization of ergonomic risk and EHS risk management plan including specific actions, owners, and due dates. Work with the EHS Leader to integrate the actions required to achieve sustainable injury reduction results in the site’s operational excellence goals and metrics.
  • Support execution of annual site EHS training plan. Ensure timely delivery of training including new regulations and standards.
  • Strengthen site EHS culture through employee engagement, ownership and accountability; support LEAN and other process improvement initiatives. Perform jobs to demonstrate proper ergonomic postures while helping educating employees and helping develop workstation setups and workstation evaluations
  • Under the direction of the EHS Leader, work with stakeholders (e.g., project leaders) to complete contractor safe work plans lock out tag out assessments, and new equipment reviews, which may require travel to the equipment manufacturer. As well as facilitating and leading safety improvements of the facilities using internal resources and/or contracted companies
  • Respond to employee requests for EHS assistance and evaluation and follow through to implement immediate and longer-term corrective actions.
  • Participate in site incident investigations (e.g., injuries, fires, spills) to ensure causal factors are identified, prevention steps are taken and validated, and lessons learned are shared and leveraged in a timely manner. Learn and apply Human and Organizational Performance (HOP) principles.
  • Use data analytics to analyze trends and identify site opportunities that may not be readily visible using only anecdotal levels of feedback. Learn how to use the business EHS management system (i.e., Gensuite).
  • Assist manager in other duties as assigned.

Culture and Communication:

  • Drive a collaborative, problem-solving culture that supports open reporting and sustainable achievement of business results.
  • Facilitate and lead operations-based safety meetings presenting pertinent information. While guiding the team to implement safe, sustainable, proactive solutions to everyday risks.
  • Provide excellent customer service and be a technical resource for the operations team to ensure compliance with regulatory and GE requirements. Respond to questions and/or concerns with timely, accurate responses.
  • Work with the site operations team to drive a culture of problem resolution and execute initiatives in the site’s annual EHS operating plan. 

Management Systems and Compliance:

  • Implement EHS management systems, processes, and procedures to achieve sustainable compliance and business performance results. Integrate EHS management tools in the lean enterprise operating processes. Drive for solutions that address both short-term operational risks and long-term environmental liability management.
  • Drive standardization across the operation for management of change and high risk processes including but not limited to overhead cranes, lock out tag out, and ergonomics.

What you need to Succeed

Minimum Qualifications:

  • BS or BA degree in engineering, safety, environmental, ergonomics or similar with a minimum of two (2) years’ experience in environmental, health and/or safety functions within manufacturing environment, or equivalent education and experience.  
  • Advanced knowledge of broad-based EH&S programs, concepts and procedures.
  • Knowledge of relevant local, state and federal safety and environmental regulations and practices.
  • Demonstrated ability to identify problems, develop alternatives and implement effective solutions.
  • Advanced computer skills including strong knowledge of Microsoft Office products.

Preferred Qualifications:

Master's degree in an EHS discipline. Strong knowledge of OSHA, DOT HMT, EPA regulations. Knowledge and application of the principals of LEAN manufacturing, and/or six sigma. Audit experience or qualifications. Certified Safety Professional, Certified Industrial Hygienist, and/or Certified Hazardous Materials Manager.

Position Requirement

  • Solid verbal, written and interpersonal communications skills to communicate effectively and foster management and employee participation.
  • Ability to effectively prioritize and manage concurrent assignments.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a cross-functional team environment and influence/drive change.
  • Legal authorization to work in U.S. is required. No sponsorship for employment visas, now or in the future, for this position.

Working Conditions:

Working conditions are normal for a manufacturing environment. Work may involve lifting of materials and product up to 30 pounds. Working in this environment requires the use of safety equipment to include but not limited to; eye safety glasses, hearing protectors, steel-toed shoes, and hardhats. Frequent walking may be required: 30% - 40%.   Travel may be required: 10% - 20%. Hours & Weekends: Working off-shift and weekends may be required.
