The Challenge

The Occupational Nurse Practitioner contributes to employee wellbeing as a team leader and member in the delivery of occupation and non-occupational health care, interacting with professional colleagues to provide employee-centered comprehensive quality care.

What you will Do

  • Coordinate & provide for the appropriate care, treatment, and follow-up of work-related injury and illness based on knowledge of the specific work environment.
  • Perform pre-employment assessments to determine applicant’s fit for duty.
  • Contact applicants or physician to arrange for further follow up (when needed) to complete pre-hire evaluation.
  • Working closely with Clinic team, serve as: 1) main clinical provider for pre-employment physicals, and 2) assessor of medical data to determine pre-hire & medical surveillance exams clearance based on set standards.
  • Demonstrate the ability to work autonomously in providing care to employees, consulting appropriately with supervising physician. Provide appropriate care, in a professional and courteous manner to employees.
  • Assess non-occupational illnesses occurring at work, determine the need for immediacy of treatment, and give guidance to seek care from personal health care provider and stabilize emergent conditions while preparing for transport, if needed.
  • Prescribe and administer medications, medical treatments, diagnostic tests, and physicals appropriately and according to prevailing regulations.
  • Appropriately assign physical limitations that promote healing of a work-related illness/injury, communicate these to the appropriate stakeholders and return employees to full duty or modified duty as soon as employee is physically able.
  • Demonstrate ability to provide care in a timely, efficient manner to adapt to clinic patient flow.
  • Functional within all databases used, primarily EMR-Cority, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, Microsoft Teams, etc.
  • Ensures a high quality of occupational medical care and judgement that meets Quality Assurance standards.
  • Conduct annual occupational medical surveillance exams, including immunizations and vaccination programs.
  • Provide individual education and counseling for illness prevention, health maintenance and crisis intervention.
  • Provide a wide range of occupational health care including, education, health promotion, injury prevention, and work-site consultations that meet current standards of occupational medical care.
  • Serve as medical liaison to employees, workers’ compensation representatives/claims administrators, personal physicians, specialty physicians, and applicable stakeholders. Provide updates to relevant stakeholders regarding the medical and work status of employee when there is a status change.
  • Provide counseling of employee mental health issues and appropriately refer and utilize EAP services.
  • Provide health-related counseling for employees within the scope of work.
  • Conduct workplace assessments regarding health issues and exposure follow-up.
  • Participate with the Corporate Occupational Health Team in the development of strategies and practices for occupational health programs in managing health problems for employees.
  • Participate in safety, HR and other plant meetings regarding medical, health and wellness, plant healthcare costs, emergency response and other objectives.
  • Participate in site-specific Health and Wellness Programs as indicated.
  • Ensure that medical information of worker evaluations remain confidential, releasing it only when required by law or by overriding public health considerations, or to other physicians at the request of the worker.
  • Employee Communication and Engagement - regularly check Outlook emails, as well as organizational newsletters and memos, to learn, be informed, and respond when necessary.
  • Complies with GE Appliances and Network policies regarding confidentiality. Maintain & safeguard confidentiality of employee health information and health records.
  • Complies with all policies related to Emergency Procedures as defined in Policies and Procedures, Medical Standards. Knows personal role in event of a disaster or emergency-situation.

What you need to Succeed

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master's degree (MSN) in Nursing and licensed as a Registered Nurse and Nurse Practitioner in Alabama. Nationally Certified as a Family or Adult Nurse Practitioner by AANP or ANCC.
  • Current Certification in AHA or ARC Basic Life Support for medical provider.
  • Appropriate certification to write prescriptions.
  • At least three years of clinical experience as a Nurse Practitioner in an ambulatory care, occupational health, family practice or emergency department setting.
  • Knowledgeable of occupational medicine, case management, ADA, workers’ compensation, and government (OSHA) regulations.
  • Proficiency in assessment skills, pharmacology, wound and musculoskeletal injury management.
  • Knowledgeable of occupational medicine, case management, ADA, workers’ compensation, and government (OSHA) regulations.
  • Strong computer skills and capable of utilizing clinical systems, including EMR-Cority, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, Microsoft Teams, etc.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Three years’ work experience in occupational health experience or experience in an industrial setting.
  • Certification in occupational health.
  • Knowledge or additional education on medical services appropriate for the work setting, e.g., pulmonary function testing, hearing conservation (CAOHC), etc.
  • Experience in an industrial setting and/or multi-shift operation.

Working Conditions:

  • Working conditions are normal for an office environment.
  • Work may require occasional weekend and/or evening work.
