The Challenge

The Senior Commodity Buyer role develops and manages the overall strategy which includes total cost, relationship, and commodity and supplier strategies for $97M in Stampings/Roll Forming & Glass, including managing and understanding the total risk associated with suppliers and supply chain. Owns the business continuity plan and financial risk and facilitates managing risk. Serves as a subject matter expert in the commodity, including the technology, materials, negotiation, market, and competition. Drives the execution of the commodity strategy for products and programs. The Senior Commodity Buyer works in tandem with R&D, marketing, operations and manufacturing specialists to take those ideas and new products from concept to completion.

What you will Do


  • Develop, drive and execute international Sourcing strategy for assigned commodities, examine global markets, and management of supply base.
  • Manage direct supplier relationships in all aspects including commercial and supply chain management, NPI support, root-cause analysis of issues, problem resolution, and improving supplier manufacturing process.
  • Work cross-functionally to develop and execute Sourcing strategies to deliver against Material Cost Take Out, Quality, Delivery, Cash goals
  • Use RFQ tools & systems to manage supplier negotiations and data, to identify and drive project execution within given Commodities.
  • Drive strategic negotiations and review all agreements before execution.
  • Drive Quarterly/Semi-Annual Business reviews with Executive Level audience.
  • Leverage key supplier relationships to resolve major supply issues at all sites.
  • Introduce supplier innovation whenever possible to improve GEA's costs and features.
  • Serve as a Global Commodity Committee Leader (GCCL) for respective commodity as needed, reporting out to the cross-business PMO.
  • Serve as a liaison between Sourcing, other business functions, and suppliers to ensure team and suppliers are supporting the programs and NPI efforts.

What you need to Succeed

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in business, engineering or related field. 
  • 5 years of relevant experience within supply chain, program management, commodity management or in a related role involving negotiating, identifying opportunities, selecting suppliers and/or implementing contracts.
  • Solid track record of project leadership and execute with significant and impactful results. Demonstrated ability to take ownership of issues, to initiate actions, and to make effective choices.
  • Proven project management and execution skills.
  • Professional oral/written communication.
  • Demonstrated ability to influence and drive change with team members, and at all levels of the organization.
  • Demonstrated international supplier management.
  • Proven problem solving and collaborative skills to develop and put in place business strategies cross-functionally and globally.
  • Demonstrated team player with a initiative to win.
  • Change agent with excellent facilitative leadership and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrates initiative and takes action proactively.  Possesses the self-discipline to take actions before they are necessary, optimism towards achieving positive outcome and the competitiveness to translate a plan into action.
