Principal Power Electronics Engineer

The Challenge

Join the GE Appliances Power Electronics team as a Principal Power Electronics engineer and help deliver the next generation of high-end and energy efficient motor controls and induction controls for use in our air conditioning, dishwasher, laundry, refrigeration, and small appliances products. We provide learning opportunities, challenges, and support for our team with a commitment to continuous improvement. This position will closely interact with other engineers along with our manufacturing and commercial teams to understand all consumer queues to design and produce new and innovative products that lead the market as well as integrate into a strategic multi-generation product plan.

What you will Do

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to define project requirements and schedules.
  • Demonstrate feasibility of concepts via prototyping of control systems.
  • Complete detailed design reviews on the embedded electronic controls, including both hardware and software.
  • Coordinate with the software development team on the architecture and design of the system.
  • Develop and maintain comprehensive hardware requirement specifications for the embedded controls.
  • Synchronize control design efforts with other sub-system design leaders to ensure successful project execution.
  • Coordinate control fabrication and qualification with the selected contract manufacturer.
  • Manage co-development efforts with global engineering resources.
  • Prepare and present project status to engineering management.
  • Up to 20% travel required, including domestic and international locations.
  • Develop, mentor, and teach engineers.

What you need to Succeed

Requirements:

  • BS degree in Computer or Electrical Engineering.
  • Minimum of 10 years experience working on embedded controls, including some experience with power conversion designs.
  • Proven project management track record on several development projects.
  • Strong electronic hardware design experience and good understanding of firmware/software development processes.
  • Strong project planning and project leadership skills and experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain relationships with co-workers.
  • Excellent analytical skills.
  • Demonstrated initiative, leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.

Desired Characteristics:

  • MS or PhD degree in Computer or Electrical Engineering.
  • Six Sigma certified Green Belt or Black Belt.
  • Experience working with global design teams.
  • Experience in meeting domestic regulatory requirements, such as UL60730, UL991, or UL1998.
  • Experience in meeting international regulatory requirements (IEC, CISPR, etc).
  • Demonstrated expertise employing Matlab to model and optimize control systems.
  • Experience in developing embedded hardware employing ARM core microcontrollers.
  • Diverse motor control design experience with a variety of motor technologies, including induction, brushless DC motors, and permanent magnet synchronous motors.
