The Challenge

Our Senior Counsel – Safety, will serve as primary legal support for GEA on a range of regulatory matters, with a focus on the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (“CPSC”) and Occupational Health and Safety (“OSHA”) policies and regulations. The Senior Counsel drives strategy, execution, and management of outside counsel on risk assessment, litigation and government investigation of matters related to safety.

What you will Do

  • Analyzes trends relating to consumer product regulatory and legislative developments, claims, litigation, quality issues, and customer feedback to provide legal and strategic advice to GEA leadership relating to Safety program efforts and risk management initiatives
  • Responsible for all CPSC-related filings and communications, including management of recalls   
  • Supports GEA’s engagement with regulators, legislators, and NGOs on safety issues
  • Maintains and cultivates industry contacts relevant to product safety initiatives
  • Serves as the Legal Department liaison to product-line Safety Councils and serves as a trusted legal and strategic advisor on a wide range of federal, state, and local Environmental Health and Safety (“EHS”) and safety-related legal issues and business initiatives, collaborating with a broad range of business functions, including members of Government Relations, Communications, Product, and Engineering teams
  • Manages legal defense of safety-related claims and litigation, as assigned
  • Provides strategic thought leadership and legal counsel to the EHS organization, including developing practical solutions to mitigate potential risks and continually improve Company procedures and practices
    • Serves as primary EHS counsel providing legal guidance and support to EHS function, including support for Occupational Health and Safety Compliance, investigations, permitting, government inquiries, and policy development and review
    • Provides legal oversight of workers’ compensation docket (providing oversight of outside counsel and support for third party claims administrator)
  • Other related duties as assigned

What you need to Succeed


  • Juris Doctorate from an accredited college or university and membership in at least one US State Bar
  • Experience Required: 10+ years, including broad knowledge of regulatory processes and product safety and OSHA related regulations
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal and influencing skills
  • Litigation experience
  • Experience working with Safety NGOs and industry trade associations
  • Strong relationships and connections within the product safety field

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience dealing with engineering or technical issues relating to product performance and product safety
  • Experience in EHS position and/or issues and/or work in consumer product industries
