The Challenge

The Environmental Health Safety and Sustainability Leader is a senior Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) leadership role that is responsible for providing EHS operational support to all GE Appliances operations to ensure compliance, assess and mitigate risk, respond to emergencies, and manage short-term and long-term environmental health safety and sustainability liability.

Key responsibilities include leading and directing business environmental, health, and safety management programs, implementing and improving EHS policies and management systems, and developing environmental standards. The EHS Leader will also be responsible for training other business operations leaders and communicating internally and externally on behalf of the business and function.

What you will Do

EHS Operations: Develop and implement tools and standards to support business needs based on compliance requirements, business risk profile, change management needs, and performance objectives.

- Deliver simple, robust, sustainable compliance and risk management solutions that are integrated in daily business operations.

- Develop key performance indicators to set goals and measure results. Conduct routine site visits to understand needs, build relationships with site/service teams, and validate finding closure.

- Develop and deliver effective training and simple, easy-to-use, accessible tools to help EHS site/service operations leaders provide accurate, timely decisions and solutions to their operational teams.

- Use data analytics and partner cross-functionally to analyze trends and identify strategic business opportunities that may not be readily visible using only anecdotal levels of feedback.

- Support and learn from incident investigations and leverage enterprise-wide solutions.

-Teach, coach, and mentor EHS team members. Ensure each team member understands how his/her role contributes directly to supporting employee health and safety, sustainable environmental performance, and business operational excellence.

EHS Standards and Compliance: Lead cross-functional team to develop, implement, and maintain business-wide environmental standards. Ensure these standards are clear and simple, compliant with all applicable laws and regulations, and are congruent with parent company policies and systems.

- Ensure all required environmental reports are complete and submitted to governmental agencies on time.

- Participate in business change management processes to ensure early awareness of operational capacity changes; business transactions including but not limited to mergers, acquisitions, divestitures, and facility closures; regulatory, and regulatory impacts on product design, and adoption of emerging technology. Ensure operational plans are in place to support compliant, timely execution of these and other business changes. 

- Maintain up-to-date business risk assessments including heat maps to ensure that EHS management systems consider and address both short- and long-term operational risks.

- Develop sustainable EHS management systems, processes, and procedures that are integrated in the business lean enterprise operating processes. (e.g., OSHA recordkeeping)

- Ensure the health and safety portions and the environmental and sustainability portions of the EHS Framework are maintained and reflect current regulations and standards. Develop and deliver training for EHS Operations Leaders to lead and learn the Framework implementation process.

-Through benchmarking, government relations, and industry trend analysis, ensure emerging risks and regulations are identified and escalated to the GEA EHS Leader. Develop and communicate corresponding risk management solutions and options.

Sustainability Operations: Lead sustainability efforts within the manufacturing facilities.

-Partner with sourcing, distribution, and plant leaders to obtain GEA’s goal of reducing our environmental footprint and help responsibly recycle appliances when they reach their end of life.

Culture and Communication: Develop and maintain excellent internal and external stakeholder relationships (e.g., regulatory agencies, peer leaders).

- Respond to questions and/or concerns received from internal and external stakeholders. Ensure timely, accurate responses.

- Drive a collaborative, problem-solving culture that supports open reporting and sustainable achievement of business results.

What you need to Succeed

Minimum Qualifications:

  • BS or BA Degree in Engineering, Environmental Science, or related discipline.
  • 10+ years of environmental compliance experience leading and implementing EHS compliance and risk management programs in a manufacturing environment with demonstrated sustainable results.
  • 5+ years of experience leading a cross functional team

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Certified Hazardous Materials Manager, Certified Safety Professional, and/or Certified Industrial Hygienist.
  • Master's degree in an EHS or business discipline.
  • Strong knowledge of regulations and standards including but not limited to EPA, TSCA, DOT, IATA, and ISO.
  • Experience working with Union workforce.
  • Experience with Lean manufacturing principles.
  • Advanced computer skills.
  • Six Sigma Greenbelt Certified.
  • Audit experience or qualifications.

Working Conditions:

  • Working conditions are normal for a manufacturing environment.
  • Working in this environment requires the use of safety equipment including but not limited to safety glasses, hearing protection, steel-toed work boots, and hardhat.
  • These roles will require frequent walking in a manufacturing plant environment.
  • Travel will be required: up to 30%.
  • Hours & Weekends: Working off-shift and weekends may be required.
